The stem heat balance sap flow sensor is the only unique sensor capable of nondestructively measuring flow rate instead of velocity without calibration. Conventional products have been handmade by craftsman for researchers. While the developer was working at the University of Tokyo, he obtained a research budget from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and succeeded in industrializing the sap flow sensor using thin-film circuit printing technology.
